Chico & Rita
Aroview: A date move with a difference, this sensuous animated tale for adults traces the love affair of a big-dreaming piano player and a gifted singer in 1940's Havana.
Though the narrative's tragic elements aren't quite as smoothly handled as its romantic ones, this film's smoky-nostalgic vibe and animated eroticism are distinct pleasures, while it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
Footnote: Co-director Fernando Trueba (BELLE EPOQUE) met artist Javier Mariscal ten years ago prior when he asked him to design a poster for his excellent Latin jazz doco, CALLE 54.

3 stars (Good Enough) The screenplay didn't inspire but the animation was terrific. The colours were soft and easy on the eye and the drawing of the exteriors, in particular, showed an attention to detail. ~Tubbs
