Wolf Children
Aroview: This beautiful, serious-minded take on werewolf folklore focuses on a young woman and her struggle to raise two children of mixed human-wolf heritage in modern day Japan.
Though an imaginative and adorable fantasy in its own right, one befitting the anime medium, dir. Hosoda's sensitive treatment places the narrative in the rich tradition of Japanese humanism. His is a mature and deeply affecting dramatisation of easily trivialised material, replete with an emotional intelligence rarely witnessed in animation. Not only a deft coming-of-age tale, but a poignant meditation on the trials of parenting, too.
