Red Psalm

Hungary 1971, 82 minutes
Dir. Miklos Jancso
Rating: [M]

Aroview: Miklos Jancso won the best director prize at Cannes 1972 for this passionate socialist folk musical set in the 1890's on the Hungarian plains.

A group of peasants go on a peaceful strike to protest their working conditions on the farms, which confuses the landholder class, who are in some ways blind to their role as oppressors. A elegantly nuanced film about the treachery of power, drawing inspiration from the Hungarian revolutionary movements of the era. Considered the director's best film by many critics.
