Private Practices: The Story of a Sex Surrogate

USA 1985, 75 minutes
Dir. Kirby Dick
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Cult / Sex, Sociology

Aroview: The debut feature from bold documentarian Kirby Dick (SICK) is this fascinating and humane portrait of a sex surrogate Maureen Sullivan, who is trained in addressing issues of intimacy and sexuality.

With a single non-intrusive camera, Dick follows the interactions Sullivan has with two of her clients - a cripplingly shy man in his 20's and a 45 year-old divorcee with inadequacy issues. We see them in contact with their sex therapists, family and friends as they work towards success in their treatment. Sullivan candidly discusses her career choice and the acceptance she seeks from her judgmental father. A sympathetic and touching (no pun intended) account of this profession and its wholly legitimate function in society.
