King Kong Escapes

Japan / USA 1967, 96 minutes
Dir. Ishiro Honda
In English, Japanese with English subtitles
Rating: [G]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Classics, Action/Adventure / Monster Mash

Aroview: Kaiji co-production between Japan and the USA which pits a robot version of King Kong (MechaniKong!) against a giant dinosaur Gorosaurus. A loose adaptation of the kids cartoon THE KING KONG SHOW (1966) which retains that show's comic strip tone.

Apes liberally from a number of classics of the era - watch out for a villain patterned after Bond characters Dr. Julius No and Ernst Stavro Blofeld, as well as a submarine commander inspired by Admiral Nelson from VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. In turn, DESTROY ALL MONSTERS took and reused this film's gorgosaurus footage.
