Rounders
Aroview: Once-bitten card sharp Matt Damon is lured into another hand by reckless pal Edward Norton, setting them back on a road paved with suckers, shysters and poor losers, to ultimately high-roll it with an eccentric Russian gang boss (John Malkovich!). If baby-faced Damon doesn't entirely convince, literate script knows all the right moves and is a jolly gripping yarn in the hands of noir specialist John Dahl (THE LAST SEDUCTION). Norton's performance, too, marks him out as one of the late 90s bright young things.

3 stars (Good Enough) A fun and gripping drama, mostly based around a series of Texas Hold 'em poker games and hustles, this one is well-scripted and acted, especially the surprise roles by Turturro and Malkovich. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) John Malkovich, Gretchen Mol, Martin Landau, John Turturro is a pretty good supporting cast but unfortunately, Edward Norton's mouth is in good form. ~Tubbs
