Chinese Box
Aroview: Set in Hong Kong just prior to the British handover to China, this follows the last dissatisfied days of dying journalist Jeremy Irons as he pads the tumultuous streets, infatuated with the beautiful Gong Li. Going for jagged, handheld camerawork, dir. Wang (SMOKE) expresses a pungent sense of urgency, but there's more than a few stereotypes lurking in the script (by Paul Theroux among others). Also stars Maggie Cheung.

5 stars (Exceptional) John, a British journalist living in Hong Kong for 20 years, deeply inlove with Chinese nightclub owner Vivian & obsessed with filming a young street-wise punk Jean. Set against the 90s Chinese take-over of Hong Kong. Hands down my favourite Chinese film. ~GenXGirl
