Aroview: Creating a credible array of intelligent female characters, the dir. of THE JOY-LUCK CLUB deals honestly with the plight of flaky Mum Susan Sarandon and her wised-up daughter Natalie Portman, burdened with a nomadic existence. Easily guessed-at storyline aside, not-too-demanding audiences will relish the strong performances.

3 stars (Good Enough) Natalie sensibly appears not to compete with the acting talents of Susan S (who is terrific) but instead, she is a good foil. In other hands, this may have turned out soppy.~tubbs
