Angela's Ashes
Aroview: Lovingly-detailed adaptation of Frank McCourt's best-selling memoir of the worst kind of childhood - the deprived Irish Catholic one.
Strives to capture the sensitivity of the prose - but if anything, McCourt's ear for comedy gets overly blunted in the process. By way of compensation, kiwi-born cinematographer Michael Seresin provides some of the most painterly images seen on screen, and casting wise, the unknown youngsters playing Angela's family shine.

5 stars (Exceptional) The poverty, the weather, the prejudice, the hypocrisy. The set designers and builders do an exemplary job with the streets and dwellings - the opening scenes hit you between the eyes. ~Tubbs
5 stars (Exceptional) Brilliant acting & dramatic portrait of Ireland in 1930s. Very moving portrait of courage in abject poverty. PROFOUND. Great extras. If hard of hearing, watch the extra "Commentary by Frank McCourt" which has subtitles right through ~Sandy
