Beau Travail
Aroview: Best Film of 2000 for many highbrow critics, this oblique study of jealousy and power in the ranks of the French Foreign Legion is pure film-poetry, woven around the ravishing landscapes of desert-bound Djibouti.
Loosely adapted from Herman Melville's 'Billy Budd', a homo-erotic subtext informs, but never overpowers the almost abstract vision of an exclusively male preserve. Veteran French actors Denis Lavant and Michel Subor, both carrying the requisite marks of experience, excel in some physically arduous scenes.
