Genghis Blues
Aroview: Absorbing, stranger-than-fiction tale of San Francisco singer Paul Pena’s passion for Tuvan ‘Throat-singing’ - a curious droning music from Mongolia in which singers are able to sustain two or three notes simultaneously. Pena’s interest was piqued by a shortwave broadcast in 1984, inspired by which he taught himself the technique and language (from braille dictionaries, as he’s also blind!) Eventually discovered by a Tuvan tour-party, he begins an epic journey to Outer Mongolia to compete in the annual khoomei competition…
