Aroview: Exploring an Irish childhood made grim by Roman Catholicism, this is like a more intimate ANGELA’S ASHES, governed as it is by the point of view of seven-year-old Anthony Borrows. Dir. Frears coaxes fine performances from Ian Hart and Claire Hackett (his parents) as the family implodes from poverty during the Great Depression, his father turning in anger to fascist politics.
