Aroview: Adapted from the acclaimed novel by Kirsty Gunn, this visually crafted evocation of a seaside holiday in the 1970s – bach, suntan lotion, whiskey sours – gathers some serious talent to unfold its melancholy tale of a family disintegrating in the harsh light of the NZ summer.

Twin plots of emotional disconnection between the adults, and sexual awakening in the adolescent daughter, revolve their events in slow-burn, but the expected insight is disappointingly slender, though the music of Neil Finn adds enjoyably to the sunstroke.

4 stars (Very Good) Set in 70's NZ, Janey spends a long lazy summer holiday with her family at the beach. Witnessing her partying/hungover parents' troubled marriage, and mother's affair, this is a coming-of-age tale with devastating consequences. ~GenXGirl

1 star (Turkey) Beautiful scenery. The story comes alive in the last 10 minutes of the film and finally grabs your attention. However, up until then there is nothing except smoldering; sad & desparate looks the characters give each other. ~cinephile
