USA 2002, 127 minutes
Dir. Jesse Nelson
Rating: [M]
Genres: Drama
Topics: Tearjerker, Mental Health.
Aroview: High-calibre acting from Sean Penn, as a retarded man fighting to retain custody of his 8-year old daughter, distinguishes this intense tearjerker.
Chiefly a legal showdown between welfare-services, who do not believe Penn can provide the necessary parenting, and the tactics of cynical lawyer Michelle Pfeiffer.
Average rating (Good Enough). Showing 1-3 of 3 member reviews.
5 stars (Exceptional) A definite tear-jerker, this is superb acting from Sean Penn and young Dakota Fanning. A semi-legal story, heart-warming (and breaking) drama, and a great Beatles soundtrack. ~Tom H
3 stars (Good Enough) Succeeds despite formulaic, syrupy Hollywood script. Stellar performances by Sean Penn and by child actor Dakota Fanning. Good soundtrack. ~Anon
1 star (Turkey) You have to question the ethics of a screenplay that tries to make money (and a few laughs) out of a mentally handicapped character. However if the real intention was to raise awareness of the mentally handicapped then make a documentary please. ~Tubbs
