Kings Row
Aroview: Celebrated and infamous melodrama of the titular smalltown, a seemingly placid American community, around which insanity, poverty and sadism hover like flies.
Chronicling the twenty year friendship of idealist Robert Cummings and go-getter Ronald Reagan (in his best role), as they are haunted by the dark mysteries of various town inhabitants - including their respective sweethearts. Although dated in some respects, the shocking twists and morbid tone were an important influence on the likes of BLUE VELVET. Beautifully shot in b&w white James Wong Howe.
