Rules of Attraction, The
Aroview: James Van Der Beek tries mightily to shake off his clean-idol image in this unruly and unattractive black comedy about an over-privileged student fraternity who apparently major in drug-taking, ritualistic sex and cruelty.
A meeting of the self-consciously hip minds and heavy hands of author Bret Easton Ellis (“American Psycho”) and writer-director - and evidential party-animal - Roger Avary, who pads his movie with ‘stylish’ technique (a high-speed travelogue montage sequence is a standout), but all but drowns vital credibility in an orgy of excess, hollow characters, and cliched irony (80s pop – ha, ha) on the soundtrack.
