Roger Dodger
Aroview: Dodging expectations all-round, this devastating black comedy has a standout script and performances, especially Campbell Scott as the callous ad exec who bluntly mentors his young naïve nephew in the finer points of being a ladies man in the Big Apple.
A rare American ‘indie’ with meat on its bones, this is a stunning achievement for its freshman writer-director, whose pungent, densely-written dialogue is realised with the control and innovation of a true master, with one memorable scene after another generously allowing the cast to live and breath their roles in long, unbroken takes. As it negotiates a tense, moral tightrope it is not always comfortable viewing, but it pays off consistently, especially for those with a taste for the rawer nerve-endings of sexual politics.
