Aroview: Elaborating on a renowned ‘urban legend’ with a refined script and a no-nonsense commitment to storytelling, this is a project fostered in the best tradition of independent film and, as such, one of the best American horror films of its generation.
The set up is classic – a rural weekend getaway for an urban professional couple and their young son is never quite the same after their Volvo has an altercation with a wounded stag. Creating a genuine sense of gothic disquiet (all wintery woodlands and animal carcasses) and enhanced by a predominant child’s-eye-view, this is that rare horror beast that doesn’t allow the supernatural element to break the suspension of disbelief, and as a result is guaranteed to keep even the most jaded horror fan in thrall.
