Eye, The
Aroview: Almost guaranteed to give you goosebumps, this unnerving Asian horror show follows in the footsteps and spirit of the watershed RING films, though this cranks up the fear factor and thankfully innovates more than it imitates in the hands of the talented Pang Brothers.
The story is simple but ripe – a blind woman regains her sight after a cornea transplant but her uneasy adjustment into sightedness is horribly unsettled by the presence of malevolent spirits and her apparent ability to foretell death. The setting changes from Hong Kong to Thailand when the mystery is traced back to the donor of the ‘eye’. The frequent encounters with the undead are expertly evoked, and though it might not fully exploit the story potential, it does, in the purest tradition of the genre, provide a solid excuse to set up a terrific series of horror set pieces and pull off a finale to rival big-budget Hollywood.
