Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
Aroview: Lovingly photographed fable of freedom, set during China's 'Cultural Revolution' in 1971 and based on the dir.'s own adolescence.
Two young intellectuals are banished to a remote rural village for 're-education', instead finding life lessons from a suitcase full of forbidden Western novels and love from a local girl. A nostalgic paean to a lost past, this is sentimental in the best, most evocative sense.
