Last Laugh, The
Aroview: One of the classics of silent German cinema, this puts visual expressionism to use for a penetrating psychological study of a man's systematic humiliation by his vindictive employer.
Demoted from hotel doorman to lavatory cleaner, Emil Jannings struggles to maintain his standing and self-respect, as derision for him grows among fellow workers and neighbours. Remarkably this silent film is almost completely without intertitles; the fluid camerawork of Karl Freund takes much credit for its success.
