Singing Detective, The
Aroview: A not unthoughtful remake of Dennis Potter's iconic 1980s TV Series, in which a psoriasis-afflicted crime writer hallucinates mystery plots and surreal musical numbers from his hospital bed.
Translated from crooning 30s London to doo-wopping 50s Los Angeles, the original's dark humour and genre-bending panache are preserved with a series of good performances, especially from Downey Jr. and Gibson. Perhaps the chief flaw lies in the filmic truncating of Potter's sprawling mindscape vision (originally 7 hours long), though there are good moments aplenty and its powerful pessimism is left undaunted by the 'happy' ending.
