Secret Lives of Dentists, The
Aroview: Typically quirky adult fare from dir. Alan Rudolph about two dentists who find cavities in their marriage, this takes imaginative yet distracting detours into comedy and “magic realism”.
Reeling over his wife’s suspected infidelity and the stress of work and family, tooth professional Campbell Scott starts to play out his anxieties through an imaginary 'inner voice' that manifests itself as his indignant dental patient (Denis Leary). A rare recent independent film that luxuriates on 35mm film, the director manages some lovely transitions between reality and fantasy, though eventually the clever conceit works against the drama and once the narrative stalls it never quite recovers.
