Innocents, The
Aroview: Notable adaptation of Henry James' ghost story "The Turn of the Screw", featuring Deborah Kerr as a neurotic nanny.
Taking a job at a spooky country mansion, she slowly comes to believe that the children she is entrusted with have been corrupted by the ghosts of evil former servants. A key entry in the gothic haunted house genre, this exceeds in atmospherics, photography and music, with an implicit sense of terror that most presentday directors would be hard-pressed to achieve with such economy and delicacy.

5 stars (Exceptional) As good a ghost (?) story as I've ever seen. Beautifully scored and photographed, elegantly menacing. It made my hair stand on end... and then, afterward, the implications sink in and it's haunting in an entirely other sense. ~fairbrother
4 stars (Very Good) Classy in all departments. ~Tubbs
