Red Sonja (1985): Best things about this movie are the totally over the top sets designed by Danilo Donati, of Frederico Fellini fame, the soundtrack to Ennio Morricone, and the landscape. Beyond that there isn't much substance. It feels like a wasted opportunity.

Vampire Circus (1972): Remarkably dark and violent for a Hammer outing, this ramps up the sensuality to 11. Wonderfully surreal, this feels more like a blood–drunk fever dream from Jean Rollin. rn Imagine if Hammer Studios had been able to make more films like this.

Longest Day, The (1962): Epic undertaking with American actors, French speaking actors, and German speaking actors. Five directors were needed to complete this very impressive effort. Recommended.
Repo Man (1984)
Excalibur (1981): Epic, eerie and dark, maybe the best take on the Arthurian myth put to film. Helen Mirren is predictably wonderful as Morgana, but Nicol Williamson steals pretty much every scene he is in as Merlin.

Threads (1984): Essential cinema, but makes me think of my childhood in the 80's with all of those government funded film reels we had to watch in school. Endlessly grim, but a realistic wake up call. Maybe a double bill with Come and See.

Dick Turpin (TV Series) (1979): Has aged surprisingly well. The acting is passable with engaging characters that endure throughout the series. There is enough swashbuckling, moonlit highway robberies, and large breasted women in taverns to keep you entertained.
Bloodsucking Freaks (1978): Legendary outrageous torture porn. Approach with caution.
Day of the Dead (1985): Romero classic.
Rush (2013): Great casting and direction effectively illustrates a thrilling true story, and the insane danger of formula 1 racing at the time.
Lizzie (2018): An engrossing character–driven thriller.
Captain Kronos, Vampire Hunter (1972): Probably Hammer's most fun outing with loads of vampire lore, great performances by Janson and Caroline Munro, and some good swashbuckling. Excellent popcorn film.
Two Evil Eyes (1991): With two heavyweight names like Argento and Romero, I expected a lot better. Bad even by made–for–tv standards. Even Adrienne Barbeau is spectacularly awful.
Cabin in the Woods, The (2011): The more you recognize the constant horror references, the more fun it is. Doesn't take itself seriously, and if you can leave your brain at the door, there is loads of fun to be had here.
Grudge, The (2004): Not a patch on the original, but still worth a watch.
Changeling, The (1979): Not so much a horror, but a sad character–driven ghost story, and is all the better for it.

Dead and Buried (1981): Yes the ending is memorable, but was it worth the effort?
Ichi the Killer (2001): If you can get past the extreme graphic violence that Takashi Miike is famous for, there are plenty of engaging and odd characters to keep you entertained.
Amsterdamned (1988)
War, Inc. (War Inc.) (2008): A little ham–fisted, but a cast this good keeps it entertaining enough.
Fiend Without a Face (1957): Nice ending, but took too long to get there.
Mandy (2018): I've tried to understand all the hype around this film, but the best thing about it is Johann Jóhannsson's soundtrack. Beyond the Black Rainbow was far more effective and memorable.; DVD $29.95
Physician, The (Der Medicus) (2013)
Come and See (1985): Unrelenting but undeniably masterful cinema.
City of the Living Dead (The Gates of Hell) (1980): That famous Italian gore is there for sure but this has to be Fulci's weakest film. It makes very little sense at all.

Star Trek - The Next Generation (TV Series) (1987)
Chernobyl (TV Mini-Series) (2019): Chilling and deeply disturbing telling of the Chernobyl disaster. A must watch.
Bullitt (1968): A bit incomprehensible at times but with McQueen and Vaughn in full force this film has bucketloads of style. Boasts one of the most iconic car chases in cinema history. An essential chapter in 70's cop noir.; DVD ~~$29.95~~ $22.45
Astronaut's Wife, The (1999)
Brides of Dracula (1960): One of Hammers best. David Peel makes a campy and rather poor showing, but Freda Jackson's performance is outstanding and suitably maniacal. The brides are particularly ghoulish, and there is an intensely creepy and memorable grave scene.
Big Trouble in Little China (1986): John Carpenter joins forces with Kurt Russell yet again for an over the top 80's romp. A bit of a forgotten gem.
Blade Runner (1982): What can be said that hasn't already been said? The Final Cut is a masterpiece of cinema.; DVD ~~$19.95~~ $14.95
Victoria (2015)
Expanse, The (TV Series) (2015): The best sci–fi tv series ever made? Possibly, yes.; DVD $29.95, $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95, $34.95
Big Lebowski, The (1998): I don't usually do comedy films, but this is undeniably smart and fun with a brilliant cast who are clearly enjoying themselves, and a whip crack script with wicked dialog. I dare you not to enjoy this movie.
Angel Heart (1987): The ending is terribly predictable, but with a film this good who cares? Outstanding camera work and beautiful imagery. A perfect slice of American gothic noir. Essential.
Deep Red (1976): Yes the characters are ridiculous, but it's giallo so of course they are. The big reveal surprises no one. However, every shot is gorgeous as are the sets. Plus the gore is glorious. One of Argento's best. Great soundtrack by Goblin too.
Some Kind of Wonderful (1987): Another guilty pleasure. The screenplay is weak, but it is nicely shot. Stoltz does ok but comes across as a stalker under a modern lens. Masterson is excellent, and Elias Koteas steals the movie with a wonderfully comic performance.
Solaris (1972)
Attack the Block (2011): Fast paced fun with sharp dialogue. Keep up.
Seventh Sign, The (1988): Essentially a movie trying to explain climate change to religious types.
Raw (Grave) (2016)
Old Dark House, The (1932): Great performances by Ernest Thesiger, and Eva Moore, but somehow doesn't quite hit the right marks.

Devils, The (1971): Every shot is a visual feast full of meaning, Jarman's sets are gorgeous. Ken Russell's most blasphemous and notorious, and powerful film is a must watch. Begging for a re–release.
Crawl (2019): This film is a great example of why having practical effects in horror movies is a good idea. The CGI in this movie is terrible. Plus I've never seen flood water look so crystal clear. It's hard to care about what happens to the characters too.

Innkeepers, The (2011): I like a lot of horror films, I even love some of them. I dislike lot of horror too. But it's not often that a horror film promises so much in the beginning then fails to deliver so badly in the execution. Disappointing.

Phenomena (Creepers) (1984): This may not be one of Argento's best, but Jennifer Connelly is always worth the price of admission, and there is a particularly nasty scene in a pit that makes Poltergeist look like childs play.
L.A. Confidential (1997)
An American Werewolf in London (1981): It may not have the bite to it that the other classic werewolf film 'The Howling' has, but some groundbreaking special effects and a great supporting cast including the wonderful Jenny Agutter go some way to make up for its flaws.
Wyatt Earp (1994)
Demons (1986): Fantastic example of Italian horror set almost entirely in a movie theatre. Some seriously disturbing practical effects and makeup. A must watch for any serious horror fan.
Waterloo (1970): Very impressive historical epic on a truly grand scale. Incredible battle scenes with a jaw dropping number of extras. I'm not entirely convinced of this depiction of Wellington, but that's a minor gripe.; Blu-Ray $24.95
Apocalypse Now Redux (1979)
Arrival (2016): Amy Adams gives a good enough performance, but Jeremy Renner is grating and wooden. However, the sound design is absolutely phenomenal, and the film takes a fascinating stance on how we view language. The aliens are great too.
Samurai Trilogy, The (Musashi Miyamoto, Duel at Ichijoji Temple, Duel at Ganryu Island) (1954-1956)
Flowers in the Attic (1987): Wooden acting, wooden dialog, and an awful lot of wooden furniture (no really). I don't really see the point of the film. Avoid.

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries (TV Series) (2012): Enchanting series with wonderful costumes with lovely performances by Essie Davis and Ashleigh Cummings. Have fun spotting the locations if you've lived in Melbourne.; DVD ~~$20~~ $15
Babadook, The (2014): Great film about grief and loss with standout performances by Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman.
Re-Animator (1985): Effects–laden genre classic. Combs and Crampton really outdo themselves.
Swarm, The (1978): Bzzzarre film amongst a swarm of 70's disaster movies. Scared me as a kid, but now it seems terribly silly.
Red Dragon (2002)
Wailing, The (Goksung) (2016): Some might say this is overly long, but what starts out as a horror comedy turns into a gripping supernatural thriller. Korean horror at its best. A must watch.
Cannibal Holocaust (1980): Rightfully infamous, but I could really do without the real life animal cruelty. Watch once if you must, then burn it.
Haunting of Hill House, The (TV Series) (2018): Hauntingly shot (pun intended), engaging characters, fun plot twists. It's all here.
Sleeping Beauty (2011): Julia Leigh should be commended for making this film. At times unsettling, but beautifully shot. There is sense of coldness and distance maintained between the viewer (voyeur?) and subject. Could well have been handled clumsily in less deft hands.
Bookshop, The (2017): Delightful (sometimes delightfully sad) film with a standout cast and some lovely performances. I dare you not to run out and buy a book after viewing.
I Trapped the Devil (2019): The Howling Man, the episode of the Twilight Zone on which this is based, is far creepier. I really wanted to like this, but it was convoluted and badly written. A tightening of the script would have helped a lot.
Us (Jordan Peele's Us) (2019): Starts off well enough but ultimately falls down in the final act.
Alien Resurrection (1997): I love Jean–Pierre Jeunet's direction, and the film boasts an outstanding cast, but somehow this movie misses the mark. It's where the franchise starts to go downhill before a full–on nose dive, but still has some memorable, and very creepy moments.
Alien 3 (1992): Watched the directors cut of this again recently, and I have to say this has aged incredibly well! The directors cut adds a lot of world building, and added creepiness Alien is still my favourite, but this is top notch.
Sudden Impact (1983)
Inferno (1980): Doesn't quite reach the dizzying heights of Dario Argento's masterpiece 'Suspiria', but part two of the Witches trilogy still has some memorable moments. A great slice of giallo.
Scars of Dracula (1970): Not one of Hammers best.
Hellboy (Hellboy: Call of Darkness) (2019): A movie so bad that even that must have taken some effort. The acting was universally terrible, the CGI had dated before the film was released, and the plot was incomprehensible.
Top Gun (1986): In spite of – or perhaps because of the flag–waving jingoism, there's no denying that Top Gun is something of an 80's classic. Beautifully shot action sequences with ridiculous characters.
It Follows (2014): A simple concept, but chilling and well executed.
Twins of Evil (1971): Damien Thomas does his best to ruin the movie, but the Collinson twins save the day. Another Hammer classic.
Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1965): Yes Peter Cushing isn't here, but an entertaining performance from Andrew Keir does his best to make up for it.
Legend (1986): Tim Curry (Darkness), and Alice Playten (Blix) totally steal the show. A real favourite for those popcorn evenings.
Ghost in the Shell (2017): Visually stunning, at times even beautiful, but no substance. It's a shame that so much potential was thrown away.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000)
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1987): I'm a 40 year veteran of horror films, but even I found the videotape scene hard to watch. Great performances by the cast though.
Hotel Rwanda (2004): A deeply humbling and powerful film. Tragic and moving, with outstanding performances.
Maniac Cop (1988): Not even a good bad movie. Bruce Campbell couldn't save it. What a turkey.
Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979): Another Fulci classic, with some terrible acting and some iconic horror cinema scenes – THAT eye scene.
Elvira (Elvira, Mistress of the Dark) (1988): I loved this film when I was younger, but the jokes haven't aged well at all. Cassandra Peterson does her best.

Howling II, The (Your Sister Is A Werewolf) (1985): Not a great film by any standard (Christopher Lee later disowned it), I absolutely love this movie. Such a guilty pleasure.
300 (2006): I strongly suspect that your enjoyment of the film will very much hinge on whether you've read the graphic novel on which it's based. A true re–telling.
Hellraiser (1987): This and the sequel and possibly my favourite horror films of all time. Pinhead is the definition of an anti–hero, with some of the most iconic lines in horror film history. Clive Barkers sense of dreamlike directorship is what really makes these films.
