Other Guys, The (2010): Brilliant comedy. Wahlberg can be great at serious roles but shines in a comedic part as Ferrell's angry partner. Great fun–I have watched it several times.
Miracle Mile (1989): One of the best ever 1980s movies AND end–of–the–world/disaster movies in–one. Great colours and lighting. The last 60 minutes play out in real–time and you are left guessing if the nuclear attack is real or not until the end. A personal favourite.
BlacKkKlansman (Black Klansman) (2018): Deviates a bit from the true events it is based on. More drama than the comedy that the trailer portrays. Final minutes show horrific footage of recent KKK/neo–Nazi groups & violence (including the horrific mowing down of anti–racist protesters by a car).
Search for Weng Weng (2013): Obsessive film documentary about the unlikeliest of all action movie stars. A surprising personality appears partway through it. Funny but it also becomes unexpectedly moving towards the end.
King of Kong, The (A Fistful of Quarters) (2007): Good vs. evil in the real world played out between two console video game players vying for the world record. Very funny.
Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014): fascinating documentary about the rise and fall of Cannon films. Lots of clips from classic bad but fun movies – low and big budget.
Rewind This! (2013): Cool little doco about the video revolution.
Adjust Your Tracking (2014): Great doco about obsessive collectors of movies on video.
Borgias, The (TV Series) (2011): Brilliant! Great acting, twisting plot, incredible sets and locations, amazing costumes and some brutal action. Loved it!
Tickled (2016): Brilliant documentary that starts with a light touch then gets very heavy and dark with some tense moments. Excellent lighting and cinematography.
Tremors (1990): An excellent 1950's style monster movie – a small town is under siege from underground giant worm–like creatures with big sharp teeth. Nice mix of suspense and comedy. Bacon & Ward & Gross are great! Spawned sequels.
Cape Fear (1991): De Niro is ultra creepy as the nasty stalking (and worse) Max. One of Scorsese's best. Watch for an actor cameo from the 1962 original. Great theme music, too.
Warriors, The (1979): A mix of odd gangs, cool music and a classic story. Some great action set pieces. The Baseball Furies gang never lose their creepy clown–like cool (even if The Warriors beat them). Great for a double–feature with The Wanderers (watch this second).
Wanderers, The (1979): Great 1960's soundtrack, cool story, interesting characters and some excellent action. A bit like if The Warriors was set in 1963. Gangs include the Baldies, the Wongs, and the psychotic hive–mind Ducky Boys. One of my favourite movies.
I Am Thor (2015): Incredibly funny with some moments of pathos and sadness. Ultimately inspirational in tone. A must–see documentary.
Tokyo Tribe (2014): Bizarre film that is a real visual feast. Elements copied from many films including Clockwork Orange and Caligula. Almost all the dialogue is done as a rap! Some good action scenes and quite a bit of extreme violence. Crazy stuff – I loved it.; DVD $29.95
Damned, The (These Are The Damned) (1963): Oliver Reed (in a suit!) leads a gang of leather–clad toughs. Catchy title song "Black leather"! The film veers into the dark world of secret government experiments on children in an underground base. Still highly topical.
