Aro Recommended Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus

USA 2005, 82 minutes
Dir. Andrew Douglas
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Music

Aroview: A soulful meander through the streets, scrapyards, swamps, mines, churches and bars of the American South under the guidance of alt-country singer and "imitation Southerner" Jim White, this documents encounters with various musicians , while also successfully dredging for deeper philosophical subtexts.

With appearances by Johnny Dowd, Handsome Family, 16 Horsepower, Trailer Bride and David Johansen, this resolves into something of a revisionist view for the 'weird' cultural quintessence of the region and especially its contradictory religious attitudes. While occasionally falling into cliche, dir. Douglas manages to craft evocative and provocative connections and images.
