Aroview: Part two of Lars von Trier’s ‘USA’ trilogy reemploys DOGVILLE’s Brechtian framework of stage outlines and minimal props in the odyssey of Grace, here descending on a cotton plantation in the South to emancipate it from slavery.

While offering little new in the way of conceptual horseplay or political allegory, von Trier’s slavery parable distinguishes itself in theatrical terms, with Grace’s mission to bring democracy to a corner of the Depression-era South a cleverly conceived, if screamingly obvious broadside on imperialism and backwards race relations. Pungently Anti-American (complete with another end credits photomontage), this retains its absurdist humour and over-acted archetypes, though is also a more accessible provocation with Bryce Dallas Howard replacing the movie star pretensions of Nicole Kidman. John Hurt again provides the delicious narration.
