Aroview: As good a Roman Sandal epic as ever there was, with a stoic and be-sandalled Russell Crowe refusing to carry over his loyalty to the new emperor (Joaquin Phoenix) and suffers the consequences, winding up a gladiator in the Roman Colosseum.
The requisite grand spectacle and Crowe's megastar-making performance compensate some of the story lulls inevitable over its length.
5 stars (Exceptional) Gladiator may be filled with historical anomalies and unlikely events, but with grand set pieces and stunning action sequences this is undoubtedly an epic adventure tale, also played brilliantly by the vigorous and gruff Crowe.~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) As usual with blockbusters the acting talents are in support roles.Joaquin Phoenix and David Hemmings look the part. Peter Ustinov is normally in these kind of films and would have helped.A lot of the action scenes are just a waste of the tomato ketchup.~tubbs
