Look of Love, TheLook of Love, The (2013)
2 stars (Good Try) Coogan and Winterbottom must be able to do this kind of thing in their sleep, which was the state it inspired in me. Dreary stuff.
DVD $29.95 | Blu-Ray $34.95
American HustleAmerican Hustle (2013)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) Convoluted scams and period trappings aside, a highly enjoyable character study, with the starry cast playing convincingly against type.
BirdBird (1988)Recommended
4 stars (Very Good) Wow! Biopics usually seem to be about ticking boxes, wheeling figures on and off. This one actually has LIFE! The design evokes without overwhelming, the cast play with consummate ease, and Venora and Whittaker's scenes together are mesmerising.
28 Days28 Days (1999)
3 stars (Good Enough) I don't know how 'realistic' a depiction of rehab this is, but it's well–handled and the cast are terrific. Could have been sooooooo much worse...
Definitely, MaybeDefinitely, Maybe (2008)
3 stars (Good Enough) Reynolds must have made a pact with the devil to parlay his anodyne charms into stardom. But the cast is great, and, so help me, I enjoyed it.
49th Parallel49th Parallel (1941)
4 stars (Very Good) Really rather marvellous. Great cameos from some of the big British stars of the day, wonderful travelogue photography from Freddie Young, and a stunning Vaughan Williams score.
Roger Corman Collection #2Roger Corman Collection #2 (Creature from the Haunted Seas, It Conquered the World) (1956-1961)
3 stars (Good Enough) Hold the phone, I like CftHS! It has a nutty, on–the–fly feel to it. Knocked out at the end of location shooting for another movie (typical Corman) and scripted by Robert Towne, methinks. I laughed.
Things to ComeThings to Come (1936)
2 stars (Good Try) You've never HEARD such dialogue: Wells, the great writer, just can't write lines fit to speak. But the best moments are pure art direction – WCM's actual career – and well worth a look.
Land Of The LostLand Of The Lost (2009)
3 stars (Good Enough) Not the WORST Ferrell movie, surely? Actually quite a lot of fun for the undemanding audience, among whose number I find myself.
ConvictionConviction (2010)
2 stars (Good Try) Predictable, pedestrian, with little of the complex moral landscape that made 'Dead Man Walking' interesting. Driver, as usual, is one of the few reasons for seeing it through.
