Les Miserables (TV Mini-series)

Aroview: Well mounted and faithful adaptation of Victor Hugo's tale of persecution and revenge set in early 19th century France, with Gerard Depardieu playing the long-suffering Valjean, and John Malkovich his arch-tormenter, Javert.

Although perhaps too lengthy for novices, this compares well with the many other versions, integrating most of the novel's subplots right to the bittersweet conclusion.
