Major Dundee
Aroview: Important homage-critique of the Western from dir. Peckinpah, with Heston playing a misanthropic prison warden who pursues a murderous Apache band into Mexico during the Civil War with the help of a 'wild bunch' of renegades and misfits.
A cocktail of anti-war messages, brutally exciting action and whiskey-soaked sentimentalising, this drives through with an epic energy all its own, though perhaps lacks the personal touch evident in 'Bloody Sam's true classics. The 2005 restoration restores around 13 minutes of the famously ravaged 1965 version.
