Young Adam
Aroview: Evocatively set amid the grimy canal barges of post-WW2 Scotland, this follows the shady fortunes of a failed writer (McGregor), whose masculine attractions conceal a touch of callousness for the women he beds.
Drifting into the lives of a struggling couple, he has soon cuckolded the husband (Mullan) with a series of frank, nothing-left-to-hide sexual encounters with the raggedy wife (Swinton). However, putting an total dampener over proceedings is a whiff of murder, interwoven with ambiguous flashbacks and vivid period touches. From the novel by Glaswegian 'beat' writer Alexander Trocchi, this is a commendable adaptation.
