Naked
Aroview: David Thewlis gives a bravura performance in a difficult role, somehow bringing humility to a complex yet unpleasant character - misogynist, misanthropist, doomsday philosopher, street bum.
Mike Leigh's brilliant, detailed script is flawed only by his compulsion to caricature the upper classes, a trademark of his that seems incongruous in this serious dramatic context.

4 stars (Very Good) Johnny is a grungy, arrogent, self-destructive, charming sociopath, on the run from the family of a woman he sexually assaulted, meets up with an old girlfriend in London. A brilliant director who captures the essence of his characters perfectly. ~GenXGirl
5 stars (Exceptional) An outstanding performance by Thewlis worth seeing for that alone. It's tough, showing aspects of British life that you'll never see on TV. Outstandingly realistic and yet horrifying; it's an important film. Wellington Film Festival 1994. ~Sandy
