Rosenstrasse
Aroview: Fact-based drama set around the wartime protest movement of Aryan German women in 1943 Berlin, who were distraught at the forced detention of their Jewish husbands, before possible repatriation or disappearance into the Holocaust.
A woman in presentday New York journeys to Germany and discovers this tale in the memories of an aristocrat who was estranged from her family by her marriage to a Jew. This, the first film made by dir. von Trotta in a decade, emerges as an enlarged fragment of the past, structured around extensive flashbacks and imbued by the inherent dramatic pathos of the story. While presenting an interesting new slant on the topic, one with radical implications, it is finally overlong, with a resolving twist that is overly simplistic.
