Hidden Blade
Aroview: The fading glory of the Japanese feudal period in the Meiji Resoration is once again beautifully explored by the dir. of TWILIGHT SAMURAI through a tale of two skilled, low-level swordsman fatefully reaching a standoff neither really wants.
With less emphasis on romance than its predecessor, broader comedy and denser intrigue, this finds its own distinction in poetically unfolding the themes of social change, caste boundaries and the meaning of honour. Although slow, dir. Yamada constructs a wonderful period atmosphere which sustains the running time.
