Shopgirl
Aroview: Generally thoughtful and subtle adaptation of Steve Martin's novella, set around the heartfelt search for life satisfaction by the lonely Danes, who works at the glove counter in a NYC department store, but holds down an artistic interest on the side.
Clearly scripted and directed, Danes' quest eventually leads to a romantic crossroads in which she much choose between a scruffy musician (Schwartzman) and a diffident, but generous older man (Martin). Although the film contains lapses in judgement, a tone of sophisticated, bittersweet honesty predominates, making for a gentle delight amid the usual romcom offerings of Hollywood.
