Look Both Ways
Aroview: A melancholy comedy with inspired flashes of animation, this impressive feature film debut from writer-director Sarah Watt nicely freshens the "ensemble drama" formula and went on to deservingly scoop the pool at the 2005 AFI awards, including Best Picture.
In a hot-and-sticky Australian town, the 'accidental' death of a local has a strange and co-incidental bearing on a clutch of lives, especially the connection between an introverted painter and a newspaper photographer reeling from a cancer diagnosis. Dir. Watt layers her serious meditiation on life and mortality with an engaging optimism and a wry appreciation for human idiosyncrasy.
