aka: To Our Loves
France 1983, 102 minutes
Dir. Maurice Pialat
In French with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / Youth, Sex
Topics: Rites-of-passage.
Aroview: One of dir. Pialat's most satisfying dramas, this concerns a journey of a teenage girl (Bonnaire, in a stunning debut) when her family life turns disappointing, violent and fragmented.
Engaging in a string of flirtations and sexual affairs, Bonnaire eventually escapes into a quickie marriage, while retaining a powerful, live-wire bond with her imposing father, played by Pialat himself in an electrifying performance. Emotionally touching, this has a certain humanist warmth and intensity which has seen it much praised by critics.

5 stars (Exceptional) Stunning film, brilliantly directed. Sandrine Bonnaire is unforgettable. A truly great French movie ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) Reprocessed Disc 2: Supplement has great material in The Inner Eye (1999) - esp. writer Arlette Langmanns' explanations, + also really fascinating interviews with Bonnaire, Breillat (what makes a great film) & Gorin. ~Anon
2 stars (Good Try) There is not a great deal of depth to either the characters or the screenplay. However considering her age, a very young Sandrine does well in anchoring the film. ~Tubbs
