Aroview: Drawing creative parallels with the Danish 'Dogma' movement, this is a rigidly intense study in survivalism that forsakes any plot contrivance to heighten the stark reality of an alienated (and alienating) 18-year-old girl reared in trailer-park France. A controversial winner of the 1999 Palme D'Or, less arguable is Emilie Dequenne's riveting performance that won her the Best Actress gong at Cannes.
4 stars (Very Good) Unforgettable portrait of the struggle to survive of unskilled youth in Europe; set in Liege, Belgium. Brilliant unsmiling performance by young Emilie Dequenne. Extra interview with Directors worthwhile. Extra film The Promise incl. even better.~Sandy
