Favela Rising
Aroview: Rousing documentary traces the transformation of a violent slum in Rio de Janeiro by former drug-dealer Anderson Sa, who was so shocked by a police massacre of his neighbours he decided to found a music and dance movement, now known as AfroReggae.
Beginning as a music group which fused African, Latin, Jamaican and American styles, the initiative eventually resulted in the founding of cultural workshops, programmes and a community centre, all designed to lure Rio youngsters away from a life of crime. Although overtrading on the violent overtones of the ghetto, dirs. Mochary and Zimbalist present this inspirational tale with energy and drama.
