Tying the Knot
Aroview: An acclaimed look at the 'same-sex marriage' debate in the United States, beginning with footage of 1970s protests and current political wrangles, but quickly developing into a touching portrait of the lives of gay widow and gay widower in the years following their partner's deaths.
As US law gives no recognition to gay partners in such circumstances, this takes a look at the heartbreaking consequences, as well as subtly and convincingly demonstrating that such relationships do have all the human qualities of 'straight' marriages. Even so, dir. de Seve is commendably evenhanded in his treatment of the issue, even if the opponents to gay rights seen here are more often than not abusive and hateful.
