Mangal Pandey
Aroview: Accomplished and stirring Hindi epic based on the life and times of Mangal Pandey (Khan), leader of the 1857 'Indian Mutiny' which severely challenged British rule and was ruthlessly suppressed.
Comprising a series of interwoven flashbacks from the eve of Pandey's execution, this begins with the native sepoy rescuing a Scottish soldier (Stephens), the story then progressing through various cultural complications, business intrigues and romances, before erupting into the broadly-scaled scenes of the mutiny itself. Beautifully shot, with a thoughtful script that avoids stereotypes.
