On a Clear Day
Aroview: Smoothly delivered feelgooder has Peter Mullan (MY NAME IS JOE) playing a middle-aged Glaswegian dockworker who decides to affirm himself and redeem his family by attempting to swim the English Channel.
Although this treads water at times - especially with some eccentric supporting comedy - dir. Dellal manages the requirements of the genre with skill and even delicacy. But its the fine performances from Blethyn and above all, Mullan - in full unsmiling 'gritty' mode - which see this working-class drama through to other side.
