Bittersweet Life, A
Aroview: A suave mob enforcer's mercy for one of his intended victims results in the full wrath of the Korean organised crime world in this slick, ultra violent revenge opera from the talented dir. of THE QUIET FAMILY and A TALE OF TWO SISTERS.
Fielding a proficiency for crisp visuals and ingenious action set-pieces, dir. Kim displays no qualms in settling for style over substance. A back-to-basics revenge picture unburdened with the weightier thematics of Kim's more ambitious contemporary Park Chan-wook (OLD BOY, SYMPATHY FOR MR/LADY VENGEANCE), we're left instead to revel in his knack for bloodlust and thuggish posturing.

3 stars (Good Enough) Slick, stylish, dark, and at times tongue-in-cheek hilarious, although never quite as deep or affecting as fellow Korean Chan-Wook Park's 'Old Boy'. ~Tom H
