King, The
Aroview: A brooding, accomplished slice of southern discomfort with Gael Garcia Bernal (in his first US film) playing recently dischargee from the Navy named Elvis who insinuates himself into the family of an Evangalist preacher (Hurt) who may or may not be his father.
Replete with thick gothic atmosphere and symbols of hellfire and sin, this fearlessly ventures into semi-incestuous dramatic territory, but manages to orchestrate its themes with a weighty lack of prurience. The dir. of the stylish docu-drama WISCONSIN DEATH TRIP follows up with another redoubtable venture into the underbelly of Americana.
