Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont
Aroview: Immensely popular drama strikes up great chemistry between its genteel, elderly titular character (Plowright) who is struggling to maintain her dignity in a backstreet London 'retirement hotel' and a much younger, free-spirited writer (Friend) she forges an unlikely bond with after an accidental meeting.
In the rather uncomfortable environs of 'The Claremont', Plowright finds Friend a willing confederate in smoothing over family issues and also a soulmate and mutual sympathiser in a world oblivious to loneliness. Plowright carries the film with perfect poise, while dir. Ireland never compromises on the serious themes right up to the poignant finale.

3 stars (Good Enough) The screenplay is fine, if a little familiar in parts, but Dame Joan is acting royalty and you need no other reason for watching this. ~Tubbs
