Uzak
Aroview: Exuding a sense of melancholic accomplishment, this slowly unfolding Turkish drama centres on two cousins - one, a successful but cynical photographer in Istanbul, and the other, a shy rural hick who camps in his lounge while looking for a job.
While the two gradually get the measure of each other (and their mutual irritation grows), dir. Ceylan explores their personal quests to gain some sympathy from the alienating raggedness and coldness of the city. Lensed with magnificent attention to atmosphere and subtle visual metaphors, this approaches the slow wry existentialism of Abbas Kiarostami, but rewards with a particularly sumptuous visual design.
