16 Blocks
Aroview: Surprisingly taut and minimalist New York City actioner has downtrodden, booze-addled cop Bruce Willis assigned a fool's errand to transport a trial witness sixteen blocks from jail-cell to courthouse.
Unfortunately it turns out that the rather-irritating witness (Mos Def) is testifying against some of NYPD's finest and that their brief journey is about to be interrupted with a sustained campaign to annihilate him. Despite also having to fight through some obvious genre cliches, dir. Donner (LETHAL WEAPON) mostly revels in the claustrophobic cat-and-mouse plot and both the leads prove strong presences. David Morse weighs in as the imposing, stone-cold leader of the hit squad with badges.

3 stars (Good Enough) Interesting straight-to-dvd release that will surprise you (assuming you pick it up cheap) with its intense chase, and comedy-factor of ex-con turned reluctant witness (Mos Def). ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) It doesn't amount to much although the ingredients are there in the Director and the locale. ~Tubbs
