Beyond the Sea
Aroview: A schmaltzy valentine to the king of big band cool, Kevin Spacey’s pet project gushingly illuminates the life and times of Bobby Darin, whose good looks and unstoppable catalogue of hits made him one of the most popular American entertainers of the 50s, 60s and 70s.
Though fawning over his subject with mostly rose-tinted admiration, Spacey, through an endearing performance, captures some of the desperate magnetism and ugly star ego simmering beneath Darin’s fame. Matched effervescently by Kate Bosworth’s turn as blonde starlet Sandra Dee, the pair fashion a swinging ode to the era of croon, while in writing, directing and singing his own songs, Spacey exudes an infectious enthusiasm throughout.
